🧪 About Fertility Consultations

What Does an IVF Specialist Do?

An IVF specialist, also called a fertility specialist or reproductive medicine specialist, is usually a gynaecologist with further training in assisted reproduction. Their job is to find out why a pregnancy is not happening, and to recommend the simplest treatment that gives you a realistic chance. That is not always IVF. Many couples need timed intercourse, ovulation medicine or IUI first.

Most people start by searching “IVF centre near me” or “fertility doctor near me”, and the first visit often turns into a package quote within minutes. An online consultation gives you time to understand your situation first: what your AMH, semen analysis and scan reports actually mean, which options suit you, and what a fair cost looks like.

You do not need a referral to book. Keep your reports and any previous treatment records handy. If you have had IVF before, the stimulation details, number of eggs and embryos, and transfer notes are especially useful. If you need tests, scans or a procedure, the specialist will tell you exactly which ones and why, so you can get them done at a registered clinic near you.

🤔 Which Treatment?

IUI, IVF or ICSI?

The three are often confused. This is the practical difference.

IUI
Washed sperm is placed inside the uterus around ovulation. Simpler and cheaper, and often tried first when the tubes are open and the semen report is reasonable.
IVF
Eggs are collected after hormone injections, fertilised with sperm in the lab, and an embryo is placed in the uterus. Used for blocked tubes, low egg reserve, endometriosis, or when IUI has not worked.
ICSI
A form of IVF where one sperm is injected into each egg. Used mainly for low sperm count or movement, or when fertilisation failed in a previous IVF cycle.
📚 10 Areas of Fertility Care

What an IVF Specialist
Can Help With Online

Each section explains the concern, the key points, and what the next step usually is. Infertility is common and treatable in many cases, and it is never one partner’s “fault”.

Section 01 of 10

When to See a Fertility Specialist

Doctors generally suggest a fertility check-up if you have been trying for a year without success, or after six months if the woman is 35 or older. You do not have to wait that long if there is an obvious reason, such as very irregular periods, known endometriosis, previous tubal surgery or a known sperm problem.

Consider a Consultation If
Trying for 12 months, or 6 months if 35+
Periods are irregular or absent
Two or more miscarriages
Known PCOS, endometriosis or fibroids
Previous surgery on tubes or ovaries
Low sperm count on a report
Good to Know
Age matters more than most people realise, because egg numbers and quality fall with age, faster after 35. If you are over 35, do not wait a full year to get checked.
Section 02 of 10

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)

In IVF, hormone injections help the ovaries produce several eggs, which are collected in a short procedure under sedation. The eggs are fertilised in the lab, the embryos grow for three to five days, and usually one embryo is placed in the uterus. A pregnancy test follows about two weeks later. Extra good-quality embryos can be frozen for later use.

Typical IVF Steps
Tests for both partners
About 10–12 days of injections with scans
Egg collection (day-care procedure)
Fertilisation and embryo culture in the lab
Embryo transfer, fresh or frozen
Pregnancy blood test after about 2 weeks
Good to Know
Success depends most on the woman’s age and embryo quality, not on the clinic’s advertising. Be cautious of any clinic that promises a result. The ART Act also limits how many embryos can be transferred in one cycle.
Section 03 of 10

ICSI for Male Factor Infertility

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is done as part of an IVF cycle. Instead of mixing eggs and sperm in a dish, the embryologist injects a single sperm into each mature egg. It is the usual choice when the sperm count or movement is low, or when sperm has to be retrieved surgically.

When ICSI Is Usually Advised
Low sperm count or poor motility
Abnormal sperm shape on testing
Sperm retrieved by a procedure (e.g. TESA)
Poor or failed fertilisation in earlier IVF
Using frozen sperm or a small sample
Good to Know
ICSI helps with fertilisation, but it cannot fix poor egg quality. If both partners have issues, the specialist will discuss what ICSI can and cannot change for you.
Section 04 of 10

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

IUI is a simpler first-line treatment. The woman may take tablets or low-dose injections to help ovulation, and on the right day, washed and concentrated sperm is placed inside the uterus with a thin tube. It takes a few minutes and needs no anaesthesia.

IUI May Suit You If
At least one fallopian tube is open
Mild sperm issues
Ovulation problems such as PCOS
Unexplained infertility in younger women
Using donor sperm
Good to Know
IUI is usually tried for three or four cycles. If it has not worked by then, or the woman is older, moving to IVF is often more sensible than repeating IUI many times.
Section 05 of 10

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

In a frozen embryo transfer, an embryo saved from an earlier IVF cycle is thawed and placed in the uterus, without another round of egg collection. The uterine lining is prepared with tablets or in a natural cycle and monitored with scans before the transfer.

Why FET Is Used
Extra embryos from a previous cycle
Avoiding transfer when OHSS risk is high
Waiting for genetic testing (PGT) results
Better timing for the uterine lining
Planning a second baby
Good to Know
An FET cycle costs much less than a fresh IVF cycle because there are no stimulation injections or egg collection. Ask your clinic how long your embryos are stored and what the yearly storage fee is.
Section 06 of 10

Low AMH & Age-Related Fertility

AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) is a blood test that gives an idea of how many eggs are left in the ovaries. A low AMH means fewer eggs are likely to be collected in IVF. It does not measure egg quality, and it does not mean natural pregnancy is impossible.

What a Specialist Looks At
AMH with your age
Antral follicle count on scan
Day 2–3 FSH and estradiol
Previous response to injections
How long you have been trying
Good to Know
With low AMH, time matters. A specialist may suggest moving to IVF sooner, or freezing embryos over more than one cycle. Donor eggs are an option some couples consider when their own eggs are unlikely to work.
Section 07 of 10

PCOS & Ovulation Problems

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is one of the most common reasons for irregular periods and difficulty conceiving, because ovulation does not happen regularly. Many women with PCOS conceive with ovulation tablets such as letrozole, lifestyle changes and timed intercourse or IUI, without needing IVF.

Common Signs
Irregular or missed periods
Acne or extra facial hair
Weight gain, especially around the waist
Many small follicles on scan
High AMH
Good to Know
Women with PCOS respond strongly to IVF injections and have a higher risk of OHSS. A careful protocol and freezing all embryos are common ways to reduce that risk.
Section 08 of 10

Male Infertility & Semen Analysis

A male factor is involved in a large share of couples who struggle to conceive, so a semen analysis should be one of the first tests, not the last. The report looks at volume, sperm count, movement (motility) and shape (morphology). One abnormal result is usually repeated before drawing conclusions.

Worth Discussing If
Low count, motility or morphology
No sperm in the sample (azoospermia)
Erection or ejaculation problems
Past mumps, injury or surgery to the testes
Smoking, heavy alcohol or steroids
Good to Know
Sperm take about three months to develop, so lifestyle changes need time to show on a repeat test. Men can join the consultation alone or with their partner.
Section 09 of 10

Failed IVF & Second Opinion

A failed IVF cycle is hard, emotionally and financially. Before trying again, it helps to understand what happened: how many eggs were collected, how many fertilised, how the embryos developed and how the transfer went. A second opinion can point to changes that are worth making, and those that are not.

What to Bring
Stimulation chart and medicines used
Number of eggs, mature eggs and embryos
Embryo grades and day of transfer
Hysteroscopy or uterine scan reports
Any genetic testing results
Good to Know
Repeated failure has many possible causes, and expensive add-ons are not always helpful. A specialist can explain which tests are reasonable for your history and which can be skipped.
Section 10 of 10

Egg Freezing & Donor Eggs

Egg freezing lets a woman store eggs at a younger age for use later. It works best before 35. Donor eggs are an option when a woman’s own eggs are unlikely to result in a pregnancy. In India, egg donation is regulated under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021 and must go through a registered ART bank and clinic.

Key Points
Egg freezing is most effective under 35
Usually one or more stimulation cycles
Donor identity is kept confidential
Donation only through registered ART banks
Counselling is part of the process
Good to Know
Under the ART Act, treatment is available to women aged 21 to 50 and men aged 21 to 55. Ask any clinic to show its ART registration before you start treatment.

No treatment can promise a baby, and you should be cautious of any clinic that does. Success depends mainly on the woman’s age, egg and sperm quality and the uterus. A specialist can give you a realistic picture based on your reports.
Many couples, especially younger women with open tubes and mild issues, are first advised ovulation medicine or IUI. IVF is usually advised for blocked tubes, low egg reserve, significant male factor, or after IUI has not worked.
Yes. Both partners can join the same video call, from one device or from different places. Men can also book on their own to discuss a semen report.
Low AMH means fewer eggs are likely to be collected during IVF. It does not measure egg quality and does not rule out pregnancy. Your age and scan findings are just as important.
Surrogacy is allowed in India only for specific medical reasons, such as when the uterus is absent or cannot carry a pregnancy safely. See our surrogacy consultation page for eligibility and the legal process.
Severe tummy pain or swelling, breathlessness, vomiting or very little urine can be signs of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Contact your clinic straight away or go to the nearest hospital. In an emergency call 112.
